Steven Pane, Professor of Music, University of Maine Farmington

My Background and Approach to Teaching:
I have been fortunate to be part of a remarkable period in UMF's history. Since arriving from New York City in 1993, UMF has deepened its identity as a residential, public liberal arts college. As part of this transformation, the college has encouraged innovative learning such as interdisciplinary courses, a four-credit curriculum, and support for undergraduate research. UMF has become an exciting place to teach and learn.

My research and teaching interests are piano (I am a concert pianist, audio) and musicology. My interdisciplinary work includes cultural theory and the connections between music and art. I also enjoy rock (something I ignored as a kid studying classical piano) and have discovered some great music thanks to my students.

I have numerous web pages strewn across various sites, from Facebook to Wordpress, and this homepage serves as a central location. For current, former, and prospective students, the sites in the left-hand sidebar connect to what we are doing in music and the arts at UMF. Feel free to look around and even join various sites.

Music and the Arts at UMF:
Music at UMF covers the standard periods of music; however, our focus is in modern and postmodern music: from Stravinsky, Cage, and Reich, to Miles Davis, Radiohead, and Tool. In addition, we encourage interdisciplinary exploration from individual assignments to majors. Students have pursued music with disciplines such as creative writing, philosophy, visual arts, and sociology. Our Arts Administration degree blends business and music preparing students for career goals such as starting a recording company or running a music school.
